Khaptad Trek – Explore the Untouched Wilderness of Far West Nepal
The Khaptad Trek in the Far Western Region of Nepal is one of the most beautiful yet least-explored trekking destinations, attracting only a limited number of trekkers each year. It is the perfect choice for those seeking an authentic experience of pure nature, rich biodiversity, diverse vegetation, and true wilderness.
From a spiritual perspective, Khaptad holds immense significance as it was the meditation place of the renowned saint Khaptad Baba, who spent 50 years in deep spiritual practice here. The region takes its name from him and has become a sacred destination for Hindu pilgrims.
Due to its remote location, Khaptad remains largely untouched by modern development, preserving its pristine beauty. This makes it an ideal trek for travelers who wish to immerse themselves in a raw and untouched Himalayan experience.
Khaptad National Park – A Living Natural Museum
Khaptad National Park, ranging from 1,400 m to 3,300 m in elevation, offers a striking blend of subtropical to sub-alpine forests, rolling green hills, open meadows, and serene streams. It is home to:
The trek rewards you with breathtaking views of Mount Api (7,132 m) and Mount Saipal (7,031 m), along with several sacred temples, small ponds, and expansive alpine meadows that leave trekkers enchanted.
Trek Experience
Your journey begins with a cultural sightseeing tour in Kathmandu, followed by a one-hour flight to Dhangadhi. Here, you can explore the local Tharu villages, offering an authentic glimpse into the traditions and lifestyle of this indigenous community. The trek continues with a scenic drive to Silgadi in Doti via Dadeldhura, then gradually ascends through Baglake and Bichpani to reach Jhigrana and ultimately Khaptad National Park.
For those with extra time, the trek can be extended to include visits to Badimalika Temple, Shuklaphanta National Park, and Bardiya National Park, adding more cultural and wildlife experiences to your adventure.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal seasons for the Khaptad Trek are March to May and September to November, when the weather is pleasant and the skies are clear. A special occasion is the July–August full moon, when Hindu pilgrims gather to worship Lord Shiva at Khaptad Baba Ashram, creating a vibrant spiritual atmosphere.
While small homestays and tea houses are available, the most rewarding way to experience Khaptad is through a fully organized camping trek, allowing you to immerse in its wilderness under the stars.
