Ramaroshan, Achham: Lakes, Meadows and Village Life in Far-West Nepal

Ramaroshan is a quiet hill area in Achham district, Sudurpashchim Province. It is known for its scattered lakes, open meadows and green ridges. Locals describe it as a place of 12 lakes and 18 meadows, and some call it the "mini heaven" of the Far-West. On clear days, snow peaks show along the northern horizon.

There are no crowds here and little tourist infrastructure. You come for slow walks, photography, local food and a stay in a mountain village. It also pairs well with nearby Khaptad.

Top Things to See and Do

  • Lakes and meadows. Small lakes and open grassland sit between the ridges. They look best after the monsoon, when everything is green, and in spring, when flowers are out.
  • Viewpoints. Walk up for sunrise or sunset over rolling hills, with distant snow peaks on clear mornings.
  • Village life. Watch farming, taste home-cooked meals and meet hosts who still live by traditional mountain routines.
  • Photography. Mist over the meadows, clear-day mountain lines and village scenes make good subjects. Early morning is the best light.

How to Reach Ramaroshan

  1. Fly Kathmandu to Dhangadhi (or Nepalgunj, then continue by road).
  2. Drive Dhangadhi to Achham. Head for Sanfebagar or Mangalsen on hill roads. This is a long day of driving, so plan for an overnight stop.
  3. Continue to Ramaroshan by local vehicle, then walk the final stretch to the lakes. How far you can drive depends on the season and current road condition.

Hill roads in Achham can be slow in the monsoon and just after it, because of landslides. We confirm the route before every departure.

Best Time to Visit

  • March–May: Clear mornings and spring flowers. Nights are cool.
  • September–November: The best views, with fresh green meadows after the rains and stable weather.
  • June–August: Very green, but expect rain, leeches and possible road disruption.
  • December–February: Cold, with possible snow on higher ground. Only suitable if you are prepared for winter conditions.

  • Carry enough cash. There are no ATMs near the lakes.
  • Mobile and internet signal is weak or absent in places.
  • Ask before photographing people, and be respectful at temples and shrines.
  • Keep spare days in your plan for road delays.
