Overview

The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek is one of Nepal’s most secluded and rewarding adventures, connecting the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area with the Makalu Barun National Park in the far eastern Himalayas. Opened in 2012, this 21-day camping trek follows a section of the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) and offers an authentic off-the-beaten-path experience. The trail leads through diverse landscapes, from lush subtropical forests to alpine meadows and glacial terrain, reaching the highest point at Lumba Sumba Pass (5,177m). Trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Mt. Makalu (8,481m), and several lesser-known peaks like Sarphu Himal and Ghanlung Himal. Rich in both natural beauty and cultural diversity, the route passes through remote villages inhabited by Limbu, Sherpa, Rai, and Tamang communities, where centuries-old traditions still thrive. As the trail winds through pristine valleys, rivers, and dense forests, trekkers may encounter rare wildlife such as the red panda and snow leopard. Ideal for adventurous souls seeking solitude and raw Himalayan wilderness, the Lumba Sumba Pass Trek truly embodies Nepal’s untamed mountain spirit.
