Gaurishankar Conservation Area: Rolwaling Valley

Nestled in the heart of the Himalayas along the border with Tibet, the Rolwaling Valley stands as a testament to Nepal's awe-inspiring natural beauty and cultural richness. Part of the Gaurishankar Rural Municipality, this remote valley boasts a dramatic landscape dominated by towering peaks like Melungtse, Melungtse II, and Gaurishankar, each reaching heights over 7000 meters. Accessible only on foot via established trails starting from Jagat, Bhiku Rural Municipality, the journey to Rolwaling Valley is an adventure in itself, requiring ten hours by local bus or a scenic six-hour drive by private car from Kathmandu. Trekkers embark on a four to five-day trek from Jagat to Beding, passing through breathtaking landscapes and experiencing the warm hospitality of the Sherpa people. Diverse flora and fauna, and glimpses of Sherpa culture deeply rooted in the region's rugged terrain. Tashi Nam serves as a gateway to the valley, offering trekkers the opportunity to traverse the challenging Daldung La pass at an altitude of 4500 meters, while the tranquil waters of Tsho Rolpa, one of Nepal's largest glacial lakes, mesmerize visitors with their pristine beauty. The valley's exploration dates back to 1951 when Eric Shipton led the first Western expedition during the reconnaissance of Mount Everest, laying the foundation for future adventurers to uncover the mysteries of this remote Himalayan gem.
